My Approach
Transparency is important to counseling. Here’s a little bit more about what to expect from me as your counselor! More information about counseling sessions in general.
In graduate school, I utilized Gestalt Therapy. That’s a fancy way of saying I often will help you connect experiences in your body with your current concerns. I also like to look at how you are relating to the world around you, both in and out of session. The goal of Gestalt Therapy is to help you bring more awareness to your life.
Modality
It’s important to feel safe and comfortable in counseling. That’s why I strive to always provide a nonjudgmental, empathetic approach. Different experiences, privileges, and ways of growing up uniquely impact our daily lives. Together we will explore these areas to learn, remove obstacles, grow, and discover how to get the most out of life. Our relationship is strictly professional and focused solely on you as the client, I will support your goals and growth.
The Counseling Relationship
You are the expert of your life, so in counseling, you are the one who will often guide our sessions and advocate for your needs. If this is something you struggle with, we will work to build your confidence to enable you to do so in and out of session. As your counselor, I will help you explore topics you bring into session with more depth or different perspectives.
You are in Control
The First Session
We’ll have the initial consultation and decide that having me as your counselor is the best fit for you. You’ll fill out all necessary intake forms and I’ll make sure to have the appropriate payment on file. You’ll think of some goals for counseling.
BEFORE
The first session may look different than the rest of our sessions as we will discuss the intake forms you filled out as well as your goals and how to get there. We may explore what previous counseling experiences you’ve had or what counseling means or looks like to you.
DURING
We’ll continue to meet as we work on the goals you came up with initially and any new ones that arise. I may ask you to do or think about things in between sessions and we’ll continue to meet while you grow and go through life.
